Remembrance Day 1998

Capt Tim Fletcher

Remembrance Day in Hamilton was even more of a special occasion than usual for the RHLI. In addition to the ceremony at the public cenotaph downtown, the Regiment helped unveil the magnificent monument at National Steel Car. President Greg Aziz last year commissioned a memorial to the war dead of the company, which manufactured Liberator bombers and Bren gun carriers, as well as artillery rounds and other munitions, during WWII.

The unit provided our band, a firing party, and escorts for many wreath-layers, including a Silver Star mother for the stirring ceremony, which was presided over by former RHLI Padre Jack Cox.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
