RESOLUTE RILEY 2008
It’s not exactly Swamp Fever… but crossing the famous (or infamous!) Beverly Swamp is part of Exercise Resolute Riley, the RHLI’s annual “Iron Soldier” competition at Valens Conservation Area. September 6th was the 2008 date, which also kicked off our fall training cycle.
The soldiers, competing in pairs, quick-march up the north-west end of the park and across the north end of Valens Lake, which makes up the swamp. They carry 20-kilogram (50-pound) rucksacks for a 1.5 kilometre “forced march” through woodland trails and across the Valens Lake bridge to the rucksack drop-off point. They cool off by wading across a part of the lake and finish with a one-kilometre uphill sprint. Total distance is approximately four kilometres.
The winning team of Pte Louis Progosh and Pte Robert Grzeszczuk have been awarded the Nicolazzo Trophy, named after Master Corporal Frank Nicolazzo, a popular member of the RHLI who died in a traffic accident some years ago. The trophy is presented at the annual Soldier’s Christmas Dinner.
